JOHOR BARU: A 34-year-old man was freed from prison today after being found not guilty of a drug trafficking accusation from five years ago by the local High Court.
The prosecution’s attempt to establish a prima facie case against M. Vijanthran for allegedly distributing 59.43 grammes of monoacetyl morphine at a parking lot at Taman Nusa Bestari 2, Skudai at 4:25 p.m. on June 23, 2019, was deemed ineffective by Judge Datuk Abu Bakar Katar.
The defendant was charged under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Section 39(1)(a), and faced the mandatory death penalty under Section 39B(2) of the same Act.
According to Abu Bakar’s ruling, the defence was successful in casting doubt on the prosecution’s case.
Datuk Shanmugam Ganesan and Nur Syamimi’ Izzati represented Vijanthran.
